Descendants of Calaway Jackson Milam

1. CALAWAY JACKSON MILAM (THOMAS FERRILL5, COLEMAN4, THOMAS3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN FATHER OF THE VIRGINIA1 MILAMS) was born April 01, 1838 in Coffee County, Tennessee, and died October 31, 1898 in Sub Rosa, Franklin County, Arkansas. He married (1) NANCY EVILINE BRYANT December 19, 1867 in Franklin County, Arkansas. She was born December 02, 1852 in Arkansas, and died May 07, 1889 in Sub Rosa, Franklin County, Arkansas. He married (2) ELIZABETH LONG BLACK September 01, 1892 in Franklin County, Arkansas. She was born 1856 in Missouri.

Notes for CALAWAY JACKSON MILAM:
In 1859, Calaway Jackson Milam migrated from Hardin County, Tennessee with his parents and extended family to Franklin County, Arkansas. In August 1862, he and two brothers, Rufus Kendrick Milam and James Franklin Milam, were conscripted into the Confederate Army. All three were assigned to the 35th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, and served until June 1863, when all three deserted. Shortly thereafter, Rufus and James joined the Union Army and helped recruit members of their new unit, the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (US Army). Rufus was made First Lieutenant and James, Sgt.

In January 1864, after the Union Army had overrun northern Arkansas, Calaway Jackson Milam, and his brother Lucas Coleman Milam, along with every other able bodied man in Franklin County, Arkansas, were conscripted into the 18th Iowa Infantry Regiment. Previously, Lucas Coleman Milam had voluntarily served in the Confederate Army, 17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, until his capture at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, and subsequent parole, in September 1862. Under the conditions of his parole, Lucas Coleman Milam swore to become a non-belligerent. Apparently, this is just what he did, until forced into the Union Army.

Calaway Jackson Milam's Union Army documents, dated 1 Jan 1864, state he was 25 years old, 5ft. 10in tall, with blue eyes, light hair, and light complexion. In April 1864, he participated in the Battles of Prairie De Ann and Poison Springs, and was reported as missing in action from April 18 to May 22, 1864. In July 1864, he was reported as "absent, sick in camp, Ft. Smith, Arkansas since June 9, 64." In January 1865 he was assigned as Company Cobbler (shoemaker). However, he "was wounded in the left hip at Luce's Farm, Sebastian County, Arkansas while in the performance of his duty as a soldier escorting Union families to Ft. Smith in obedience to orders of the Commanding Officer of said fort on or about March 20, 1865." Family tradition says he was attacked by "bushwackers." The other side says he was confiscating chickens when shot.

Following the war, he returned to farming, and from time to time, he and his brother Lucas, owned and operated gins in Franklin County.
