1. SARAH IVA MILAM (DAVID WALKER6, JEHU LEAKE5, JOHN "JACKEY"4, JOHN3, JOHN2, UNKNOWN FATHER OF THE VIRGINIA1 MILAMS) was born September 03, 1876 in Crowley, Johnson County, Texas, and died July 08, 1975 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. She married BENJAMIN HERBERT BLOUNT December 12, 1901 in Lawton, Oklahoma. He was born July 20, 1880 in Anderson County, Texas, and died November 10, 1930 in Houston, Harris County, Texas.
Notes for SARAH IVA MILAM:
"Ivie" as our family called her was, in the words of her son, Ben
Milam Blount, Sr., a "Mother, Father, Teacher and Poet." Her earliest
known teaching position was at Duncan High School in Duncan, Indian Territory
(Oklahoma), during the 1901 - 1902 Session. She later taught English and social
science in the San Antonio (Poe and Page Junior High Schools) and Harlandale
Independent School Districts. On September 27th 1950 she received a
Distinguished Service Award for twenty-five years of service to the former. Mrs.
Blount was cherished by her students. Many of them maintained contact with her
even after her retirement in 1950 and on one occasion a former student wrote a
letter to the newspaper editor listing her as one of his two favorite teachers.
Perhaps her most famous student was Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez who honored her many years later for her contributions to the Democratic Party of Bexar County. Her contributions to the Party were so valued, by the likes of Lyndon Baines Johnson, that she was invited to the Vice President's gallery at the Inauguration of John F. Kennedy.
In August of 1942 she completed her thesis entitled, "High Roads of Texas Verse" and several weeks later received her Master of Arts degree from Southwest Texas State Teachers College. Her poetry appeared in Kaleidograph Magazine, the Baptist Sunday School Times, Parent's Magazine, poetry columns in the Dallas News and Dallas Journal. Three National Anthologies printed her poems and one was the prize winner in the Houston Post poetry contest. She authored a small volume of verse, "Through the Years" that was published by Naylor Publishing Co. It was her custom to donate the proceeds of her poetry to worthwhile causes, especially, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch and Boysville of San Antonio. She lived 98 years and had a keen mind to the end. She is missed by all of us.
