Descendants of Thomas Ferrill Milam, Jr.

(THOMAS FERRILL, SR.5, COLEMAN4, THOMAS3, JOHN MILAM OF2 HALIFAX, VIRGINIA, UNK FATHER OF VIRGINIA1 MILAMS) was born September 05, 1844 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and died March 29, 1912 in Sub Rosa, Franklin County, Arkansas.

He married REBECCA ADELINE MAINARD December 25, 1867 in Franklin County, Arkansas, daughter of JAMES MAINARD and LOUEZA HARRIS. She was born March 30, 1851 in Hardin County, Tennessee, and died March 18, 1932 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.

Notes for Thomas Ferrill Milam, Jr.:
In November 1861, at age 17, he, along with his father, age 51, and his brother Lucas Coleman Milam, age 24, enlisted in the Confederate States Army at Fort Smith, Arkansas.  All three served in the 17th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, CSA.  Following the Battle of Pea Ridge/Elkhorn Tavern in March 1862, his father died in the Confederate Hospital near Van Buren, Arkansas.
  His brother Lucas Coleman Milam was captured at Battle of Corinth, Mississippi, paroled and sent home after giving an oath to become a non-beligerant.  Following the Battle of Corinth Thomas, Jr.'s unit became the 11th-17th Consolidated Arkansas Infantry Regiment.

Thomas, Jr. was captured July 4, 1863 at the Battle of Helena, Arkansas when Vicksburg and all Mississippi River defenses fell.  He was first imprisoned at Alton Prison, Alton, Illinois until April 1864.  At that time he was transferred to Fort Delaware Prison on Pea Patch Island in Delaware Bay.  He spent 10 days in hospital in June 1864, and was paroled in May 1865.  He returned to Franklin County, Arkansas and became a farmer.  He married Rebecca Adeline Mainard in 1869, and together they had 11 children.  He died in 1912 while tending his orchard.  Following his death, his wife was granted a widow's pension by the State of Arkansas.

Additional notes for Thomas, Jr.'s brothers' service in Civil War:
In August 1862, three brothers: Rufus Kendrick Milam, James Franklin Milam, and Calaway Jackson Milam, were conscripted into the Confederate Army. All three were assigned to the 35th Arkansas Infantry Regiment, and served until June 1863 when all three deserted. Shortly thereafter, Rufus and James joined the Union Army and helped recruit members of their new unit, the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry (US Army). Rufus was made First Lieutenant, and James was made Sgt.

In January 1864, the Union Army overran and occupied northern Arkansas.  Thomas Jr.'s brothers Lucas Coleman Milam and Calaway Jackson Milam were conscripted into the 18th Iowa Infantry Regiment until the end of the war.  Calaway was wounded during an ambush near Fort Smith, Ark.  Following the war, both returned to farming, and from time to time, owned and operated gins in Franklin County.

In summary: This family had a father and 5 sons who served in the Civil War. 
--The father, Thomas Ferrill Milam, Sr., died in the war.
--Son: Thomas Ferrill Milam, Jr. served in CSA the entire war, 1861-1865.  Age 17-21.  Was POW 2 years.
--Two sons: Lucas Coleman Milam & Calaway Jackson Milam initially served in CSA.  In 1864, both were forced (conscripted) into 18th Iowa (USA).
--Two sons: Rufus Kendrick Milam & James Franklin Milam initially served (conscripted) in CSA.  Both deserted CSA in 1863 and joined Union Army (2nd Arkansas Cavalry).
