Joseph Milam/Milum
of 18th century western Virginia

No "official" records currently exist that mention this Joseph Milam.  All we have are stories and rumors, although they are fairly old stories which lend weight to them.  In addition, "Milam Gap" and the Milam Apple, both originating in what is today Madison County, Virginia, definitely do exist and are said to be named for him.  No other Milam has laid claim to these namesakes, therefore substantial credence must be given to this Joseph's existence.  He is also rumored to be related to Thomas and John Milam of Virginia.  Records listing him are sorely needed to prove his stories.

Consideration should be given to the possibility that this Joseph Milam is related to the Revolutionary War soldier Joseph Mileham of nearby Pennsylvania.
